Match Officials

Who are they, what are they and what do they do?

For English Hockey National League games and above (National & International games) various officials will be present, as well as the umpires. Most commonly there will be a Match Delegate (MD, or Technical Officer -TO in FIH speak) appointed to manage/preside over each game. MDs will also be present at some HA Cup & Trophy rounds and possibly at some tournaments. Another official you are more likely to come across is the Umpire Manager. Most tournaments/festivals, at whatever level will have an umpire manager to organise appointments and brief the umpires on what is happening. The purpose of this page is to explain the duties of these officials and how you as umpires interact with them. They are there to help and make your job easier.
